March 28: Cowboy

Northern Territory, AUS

Since moving into year two of my PaD I haven’t articulated my “rules.” Like many of you year two (and three) padders, I plan to be a bit more relaxed.

Generally I will still post a new image taken that day, but my new relaxation rule is that I might put up a recent image that I think is striking to share and to get your critiques.

This is one of those. I really like this one. But do you? Yesterday I posted this image of Don Gappa from my Australian trip. The original was underexposed, and as I tried to fix it, I cam up with this version.

What do you think? Your honest feedback please.

Oh, by the way, he is riding a camel!!!

I really like your image. I like the silojuette against the nice blue sky. I agree with one of the coments about getting more profile at the face. I´d try with photoshop to dark a little bit that part of his chest wich is a bit lit.
I really like the silhouete efect, event hought we can´t see his face.

Wow you sure got some feedback!
I like it. Improvement for me would be a bit more profile of the face/hat.
Would dash out to try it but don't see it working against this morning's grey sky!

Excellent shot!

I agree with the masses here Robin... it looks like a statue and makes an interesting shot that way. I think the fact that you shot from below him helps make that statue effect happen. Nice work

Heyas Robin, I too love high contrasts/siloette's (sp) it seems.. I do like how his shirt/arm/back has those lit textures there tho too.. pity there isn't a bit on his hat tho.. that would be cool.

I'm gonna stick out my neck on the block here Robin. I love the silhoutte look. I love the graduated blue sky b/g. The only thing that bothers me is the arm and sleeve so highlighted. The side light is a great idea, I think it's just a little too much. Maybe a little crop leaving the elbow in, of course, but it could draw the eye up the back a little quicker??? JMHO.

To be honest, while the technical stuff is VERY well done, the final image doesn't do a whole lot for me. Take that with a grain of salt, as I'm obviously in the minority here! I think the reason is this: since it's NOT a statue, I want to see the face more. I do like the background and the light to his back. Anyway, that's my two cents!

Works for me! Cool lighting and perspective. TG for PS

Cool image! I like the dark look of the cowboy, and the bright blue sky!

I think this is a great shot of the Aussie bloke they call the stockman...until you mentioned he was riding a camel. Hmmm, :>) I like this shadowy image, Robin.

I like it, especially the highlights on the left side, on his arm,
also the saturated blue sky.
I like your new "rules", mine are much the same.
From a "Year Two" guy, I think you are going to enjoy Year Two
much the same as I am.

I too thought it was a statue! It`s excellent!

Impressive!

Interesting approach, when you look close enough you can see it's not a statue.
I like it.

You know what I thought this was? The John Wayne statue outside the Orange County Airport. I like it a lot.
Di28-Mar-2005 18:51
I'm still so new at this that my opinion doesn't really count, but, I personally would like to see just a smidge more light in his face to distinguish it from a statue. Still an excellent image, though ;-)
Cliff28-Mar-2005 17:20
Geesh..I thought it was John Wayne for a minute :o)

I really like it Robin. There's detail there - look a the stubble on his chin but at the same time we only get a glimpse. Excellent.

I too thought it was a statue! Wonderful image!

I like this and I, too, thought it was a sculpture. The light gives it a metallic sheen.Very nice, maybe I'll try one like this of myself as it hides wrinkles.

Great shot. Very Marlboro Man-esque
Gayle P. Clement28-Mar-2005 15:27
I thought this was a statue in the thumb and even in the larger version it's only the whiskers and the nose that gives is away. The light on his back adds to the idea of a metallic sculpture. I like it.
Cliff28-Mar-2005 15:25
I quite like this strong siloutte Robin.
