Biggin Hill

I live in Biggin Hill, a small town in Kent situated on the top of the North Downs, the highest point in the south of England. If you draw a line between here and the Ural mountains in Russia there's nothing higher in between... so when the wind comes from that direction we can get some pretty severe weather ! In 1987 we were virtually cut off with 4 feet of snow and 20 foot drifts. On the other hand we'll never suffer from flooding...

The town is quite young - as a place on the map Biggin Hill did not exist 100 years ago and the area was almost entirely farm land forming part of the Manor of Aperfield in the parish of Cudham, Kent. The land was divided up and sold off in plots in the early years of the 20th century but it didn't really become settled as a town until after WWI. The area is still quite rural, despite being only 16 miles from the centre of London.

Biggin Hill is famous for its historical association with the Royal Air Force; the RAF and Biggin Hill airport played a major role in the Battle of Britain during WWII. After 75 years the RAF left in 1992, but we still have a small commercial airport and several flying clubs. Biggin Hill is also famous for the annual International Air Show, which is the largest of its kind in Europe. It's not unusual to be visited occasionally by airplanes on their way to / from other airshows in the UK, so we'll sometimes look up and see a Spitfire or a Harvard flying past, or a Russian Sukhoi practising aerobatics !

These websites have more information about the area: http://www.bigginhill-history.co.uk/ (which includes old maps and lots of historical photographs) and http://www.bigginhill.co.uk/
