Scientific name: Seleucidis melanoleuca (Daudin, 1800). Bird pictured here is a male.
Distribution: The 12-wired bird of paradise inhabits the lowland alluvial rainforest of mainland New Guinea and adjacent Salawati Island.
This bird is so named due to the 12 wired projections protruding from its tail. These are more aptly described as 12 lateral plumes ending
in black recurving filaments. This bird is very rare and has been successfully bred at the Jurong Bird Park in Singapore.
Researchers have described a 'wire-wipe' display, performed by the adult male to best present his flank plumes and his bare pigmented thighs
to the female and to use his unique 12 flank plume ‘wires’ to brush across the female’s face and foreparts. The reference is here.
