The 40-odd species of this genus occur from India through Southeast Asia to the Philippines, New Guinea, Australia and the islands of Pacific, at low to moderate altitudes. They usually consist of a group of crowded globose pseudobulbs with several long, broad, pleated leaves. The inflorescences arise basally and have several large flowers opening progressively, in shades of purple, yellow and white.
