This is the first Wild Turkey I've seen on Duxbury Beach in all the years I've been going out there. Dan Furbish reported seeing a dead one a few years back but that's the only one I know of. The bird was walking deliberately southward along the eastern edge of the parking lot south of the Pavilion (Blakeman's). I caught this shot from the car as it turned into the short pathway to the beach. I suspect there are some beachwalkers that have a tale to tell when they see their friends!
It was a solo bird, and my guess is it got there by walking down from the Marshfield-Duxbury shoreline rather than flying across the Bay. Thinking about the number of turkeys now living in the area and the ease of strolling down the Beach road, I'm surprised I haven't seen one sooner!
Update... a couple of weeks later a Turkey was seen on Gurnet Point (3.5+ miles down the beach)- likely the same bird. The bird successfully nested and for a short while there were young moving about the Gurnet houses. They disappeared early in the summer, I'm told, likely victims of the foxes or coyotes that live out there.
