Nine-banded Armadillo

Oakdale Twp., Noble Co., Oklahoma

A Nine-banded Armadillo (Dasypus novemcinetus) foraging in the ground for crub worms. It is the official state mammal of Texas. North of the Red River, in Oklahoma they are sometimes jokingly referred to as the state bird of Texas. Thirty years ago, Armadillos were rarely seen in northern Oklahoma. Now they can be found in almost every part of the region, familiar to most people as the "road kill" seen along our highways.
