Extra 6918 East powered by DDA40X's #6918 and #6922, spliced by a C&NW GP50, meeting Extra 2915 West at mile post 483. The westward drag was pulled by U30C #2915, SP SD45T-2 #9184 and SP SD40T-2 #8563.

While driving along Interstate 80, I passed a slow moving freight train west of Wypo. I took the next exit and drove into the town of Burns to await it. After photographing Extra 2915 West struggled upgrade on track one I noticed the brakeman pointing to the west. I looked over my shoulder and there was Extra 6918 East approaching on track two at 70 mph. I'd already taken the last shot on the film in the camera. Luckily, I had a Pentax KX hanging from my shoulder. With no time to set proper exposure, I reach for it while turning, removed the lens cap and took this snapshot.

In March 1984 the Union Pacific took their remaining DDA40X locomotives out of storage and temporarily returned them to service. It was reported it would only be a few months until all were retired. Having never seen one, I decided to spend my vacation along the UP system hoping to photograph the surviving units. This was my first opportunity to see one up close. In the next few days I was able to see most of the surviving DDA40X locomotive at work in Wyoming and Nebraska. On the Sunday after this siting, I rode an excrusion pulled by #6922 between Denver, Colorado, and Borie, Wyoming, where it was switched out for the Challenger for a return trip over Sherman Hill into Laramie.

Locomotive #6918 was retired on 16 May 1985 and traded back to EMD in May 1986. Meanwhile, engine #6922 was donated to the city of North Platte, Nebraska, for public display.
