Photography is illegal in the Congo without a permit costing upwards of $200 and even with this, its very hit and miss. I did not have this permit, nor did I have a Visa or even a passport on my visit. So when, after requesting a photo, this man decided to ask for payment it created a rather tense situation, not to mention the seventy or so people who were surrounding me. The last thing I needed was to draw unwanted attention to myself so I asked the man to follow me to a private place where I could get some money before moving as fast as I could to the nearby Ugandan border while he gave brief chase.
