Bunagana was a rebel stronghold, blocking trade with neighbouring Uganda as recently as 2008 as trouble spilled over from the weak ceasefires enforced at the end of the Second Congo War. Even today, the inhabitants of this town live on the fringe of peace and war but now a once-weekly market brings over much needed trade and income.
