My uncle, PFC Walter Neske, was killed in the initial assault on Eupen preparatory to the attack on Aachen in September 1944. He stepped on a landmine and lasted about one day before dying. His Purple Heart has been passed down to me; it is one of my most treasured possessions. Like Mr. Fulbright, Walter was only 20. His name is inscribed on the First Division Monument across from the White House and his body lies in a cemetery in Paterson, NJ.

My father served with T/5 Walter Fullbright in the signal corp in Europe. He said that because he had a baby face the guys referred to him as Babe. My father told me that upon hearing enemy fire in the woods T/5 Fullbright ran into the woods to engage the enemy. He was cut down by machine gun fire and killed. My father said the German was captured and was badly beaten, not sure if the German soldier survived the beating. David I have been trying to locate the information on Fullbright for years, you have quite a bit of info on the incident which verified my father's account. May I ask your Dad's name? I may have a picture of him in my dad's old album. Would love to talk to you about the 56th. (heyrabbitwhat@aol.com)

Mr. Fullbright was killed on December 17, 1944. He was 20 years old. His body wasn't returned to the US until October 1947. He didn't reach his final resting place until November 16, 1947. My father was part of the troops that captured the paratrooper that killed Mr. Fullbright. God bless all our veterans. May we always remember and honor them, especially those, like Mr. Fullbright, that gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
