Ruins & Relics of Persia

By evidence, the history of architecture and urban planning in Iran (Persia) dates back some 10000 years ago.
Persians were among the first to use mathematics, geometry, and astronomy in architecture.

Each of the periods of Elamites, Achaemenids, Parthians, and Sassanids were creators of great architecture
that over the ages has spread wide and far to other cultures being adopted.

Although Iran has suffered its share of destruction, including Alexander the Great's decision to burn Persepolis,
there are sufficient remains to form a picture of its classical architecture.

(1) Pasargadae : An ancient Persian city as the capital of Cyrus II, founder of the Achaemenian dynasty.
He was said to have founded the city on the site in 550 BC but was surrendered to Alexander the Great in 330 BC.
It was known for the majestic simplicity of its architecture;
its ruins include the bases of several large buildings and the nearly intact Tomb of Cyrus.

(2) Persepolis : Ancient Persian city built in a remote and mountainous area during the reign of Darius I,
who made it the capital of Persia, replacing Pasargadae.
In 330 BC Alexander the Great plundered the city and burned the palace of Xerxes I.
The city's ruins cover an extensive area and comprise a number of colossal buildings,
including palaces of early Persian kings, a great staircase, an audience hall, and a treasury.

(3) Naghsh-E Rostam : 4 tombs in the mountain of Darius I, Artaxerxes I, Xerxes I, and Darius II.
Each cross shaped above is over 75 feet high and 60 feet wide.
Eight stone carvings from Sassanian dynasty below the achaemenian tombs showing conquests of kings;
believed was created to celebrate the victory of Sassanian king, over the Romanian invader, Valerian.
