Birds of Southern Arizona

Many of the birds in this gallery are transits, either on their way south to their wintering grounds, or in the spring, heading north to their breeding grounds. Others are year round, or winter residents. Most of the birds in this gallery were photographed in southeastern Arizona The images are not in any particular order, the most recent images will be on the last few pages.

I'm curious, I live in Ajo, Az.130 miles SW of Phx. today I was sitting on my Patio and saw what I thought was a Bald Eagle, it flew about 150 ft.from me, the bird was solid black with a yellow head and the same size of the bald eagle, Ive never seen this bird before but have seen hundereds of bald eagles, I tried to find a picture of it , but no luck, can you help ?

There is a waterfowl down by the lakes in Chandler, AZ. It is larger than a duck, all gray, long neck, a bill similar to a duck, and sounds almost like a bullfrog. I have seen at least half a dozen. I cannot find a picture of it anywhere on line. Does someone know what kind of bird it is? thank you.

I live near Luke Air Force Base in Arizona the only reason I was looking up was that was watching a jet then I noticed a very large long-necked solid white bird very large to say the least it was circling at the time and slowly flew off still circling about two-thirds of the way out of the Wings they were bent down just wondering what kind bird that might be

This is absolutely awesome. I have an all yellow peach face love bird coming to my feeder. I have 8 regular (green and blue) peach face love birds that show up with the yellow one. Can you tell me if this is actually a different lovebird or just simply a different color? Is one male and one female. I hope you can shed some light on this very different love bird.

I have lived here in Az. for over ten years and I have been feeding the birds for just as long. It sure is nice to know the actual names of these little guys because the nick names I have given these guys are kind of stupid. ;)

here in Arizona for visit. Camping at the Cedar Cove Campground a group of quail came out of the dessert looking for a good meal I suppose. Your pics helped to identify. Thanks

Thank you so much for sharing these great bird photos. I live in Tucson and recently bought a birdbath and waited impatiently for birds to come. To my great amazement I now have a family of Cooper's Hawks sitting there everyday. One of them is very dark brown, not speckled like the other 2. Are the females darker than the males? My cats, who are always inside, enjoy watching them, too. Your pictures of these hawks helped me identify them. Thanks!

I have a question regarding a type of bird in our yard. We live west of Phoenix not far from Wickenburg. the bird is about the size of a Robin, that is mostly gray in color, has a black mask and a dull yellow belly....the tail is not vee shaped and the beak is straight. I did not notice this bird until the mesquite trees attracted bees. Any ideas. I am unable to find this bird in any pictures.

We have a bird stealing dry cat food off the back porch. It is one I've never seen in all my 30 years in Arizona. The distinguishing characteristic is a very long extremely curved bill, with a very stout body. It looks as though this bird could hold it's head parallel to the ground and put the curved part in possibly an ant/bug hole. The bill comes out of the head aprox. 1-1/2 -2 inches then the tip curves downward about the same length or a little longer. It is a medium grey-brown with dark eyes.

Thank you so much for the amazing pictures. I've only lived in AZ for 9 years and was trying to figure out what some of my bird visitors were. My back yard faces open desert/golf course and I've recently realized I have a Bird Resort going on. Fresh figs on my tree, water in the fountain for bathing and drinking and cool cement patio out of the sun for staying cool in the afternoon for napping and cleaning of feathers.

Can anyone tell me what the bird I saw in Phoenix was? We stayed at a very nice resort, and while there, we saw a lot of one particular bird that looked a lot like a cowbird - brown head and black body, but these also had brown(bronze)breast and were perhaps a bit larger than the cowbird I am familiar with. They were very quick to snatch up any dropped food around the pool. Thanks in advance.

I have about 8 small parakeets at my bird feeder. They look like a parakeet but are they something else? Did they escape? Someone told me they may be a type of a love bird, can that be?

This a great site I used to live in Indiana and so I did not much about the birds here. This helped alot love it I likr tofeed the birds I am going to set up a birdbath and keeep water all year round grandson,2,likes o help feed the birdsand wwatchthem too

first of all this is a great site with wonderful pictures. i would like help in identifing a bird our state bird is the arizona cactus wren.a cactus wren a another bird that is just slightly larger come into my back yard together the other bird look just like the wren but has a very long beak and the top of the beak is slightly curved up it sit onour dogs pool and will drink plenty of water unlike the wren it runs fast and will pick up marble size bread and bury them in the rocks i have taken pictures from inside the house and they are not very good. john

Wonderful photos! I was hoping to identify a bird that comes to my yard. Most all brown and fairly large 10" or more with a long curved beak and a long tail. He digs holes in the ground! Any ideas of who he is?
