These pictures are a case of having your camera at the right time, at the right place. What an incredible moment to photograph. Too bad for the herons but this is nature. One dies and another lives on.... Well captured! Big Vote.

Guest, some people shouldn't leave their digital cocoons. If we could perceive all the birthing & dying going on 2 inches from our suburban porches, we have more appreciation for nature as it exists—rather than as we'd like it to be. How do you expect us to clean up the mess we've made on this planet—let alone go into outer space, which may be the salvation of our species—if we're "grossed out" by nature? Take it in, it's not gonna hurt you nearly so much as your tender ignorance will.

I can't get into what a wonderful "photo op" the sequence is. It bothers me like hell that the young bird was captured and killed. Some things in life aren't pretty and certainly this is the reality of a bird's life. Perhaps I'm too sensitive, perhaps I hurt too easily, but this makes me sad. So, you'll have to pardon me if I don't find these pictures "cool".

I spent several years in Kingfield, Maine as a 10-13-year old.Observed many wildlife

Great photos! I sent them to a friend here in Florida who said that birds often build nests over a gator hole knowing they would keep critters from climbing the tree.
