Saturday 30th August
Day 1351
B&W August
Today I suppose I was on a bit of pilgramage... I have wanted to visit the beach at Slapton Sands for years, not because I am a beach bum, far from it. This was the scene of a major military accident in the run-up to D-Day. The American Army used it for rehearsals for the landings on Utah Beach, and during one of the final rehearsals, a German E-Boat attack sank two of the LST's and damaged others. The geography of the area is fascinating, yet many taking in the beach are oblivious to this! Directly behind the beach is a Ley, or natural lake, which is now a Nature reserve.
