Wing Damage on Columbia during Re-Entry

The picture, taken from Kirtland AFB in New Mexico, shows structural particulate matter trailing the left wing of Columbia on its re-entry. It is believed that foam from the external tank struck the left wing of Columbia during launch creating a 12 inch hole of the leading reinforced carbon-carbon structure allowing hot plasma to penentrate the wing structure.
