This beautiful mission was destroyed in the huge 1868 earthquake,
altho some of the contents did make it through. It was replaced
by a wooden church, which was later moved so that another adobe
building could be rebuilt in the same fashion as the original from
1809. The interior appears now as it did when it was redecorated
from 1833-40. The adobe walls are approx. 4' thick & it is built
upon the original old rock foundation & tiling.
Some of the original artifacts that survived the earthquake are in
place, with wall decorations & paintings duplicated, it has an "Old
World" feel to it & is very inviting.
