La Mision Del Gloriosisimo Patriarca Senor San Jose

The 14th Mission, (founded on June 11th, 1797 by Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen)
Old Mission San Jose, was thriving by 1831. With fertile soil & plenty of water, the
peaceful Ohlone Indians were accepting life here, numbering close to 2,000 inhabitants.
The Mission never did complete it's "life cycle" though. A massive earthquake in 1868
made the need for rebuilding a demanding one & the political upheaval at the time did
not allow for the "Spanish Law" to go into affect as it should have. According to the
paperwork given to us at the Mission, the Spanish Law said "..that the mission's lands
and resources belong to the natives & would be put into their control when they had
learned to manange themselves in the Spanish way."

Not exactly how things went, as we know from History. But this Mission is a beauty, with
alot of "Old World" still around & within. Mass is always held on weekdays at 8:00 a.m.,
if you like. The museum/grounds are just fantastic & attached, you will see a cemetary run
by the Dominican Sisters of San Jose. Beauty is everywhere you look. Enjoy this tour ~
