Postcard photo: Normann Kunstforlag

Sunday, our last day. Figures that the day we leave it's gorgeous weather -- it made it that much harder to have to go back home! To squeeze in a little more sightseeing before our flight, we got up early to go to Vikingskipshuset (Viking Ship museum). That early in the morning we had the city to ourselves as we rode the ferry across the harbor to the musuem. I really liked the spartan design of the musuem and how it showcased the ships. There were two full ships and remnants of a third that were excavated in the early 1900's from farms in the Oslo area (can you imagine finding that on your farm?!). The ships were built in the 800's and used to bury nobility, along with all the clothing, furniture cookware, transportation, animals, and food they would need in the afterlife. Because the oak ships were buried in blue clay, the ships and many of the items were well preserved and are one of the best collections of artifacts from the Viking era.
