One of the villages we stopped at had a relationship with monkeys. They are sacred -- they can touch us, but we cannot touch them. We were required to have a local guide with us (one guide per couple), and we could buy nuts and fruit to feed to the monkeys. After wandering around with the monkeys, we were taken to the guide's family shop for souvenirs. Not a bad way, but I always have mixed feelings about living off tourism in this way: what for us are small amounts of money can make a significant difference for them, but sometimes it seems pathetic. This village was actually pretty reasonable, but other stops were less happy and amusing: sending the youngest, cutest children to sell pencils or postcards, using pythons or fruit bats to get the tourists to pose for a cost, ....
