The Avebury Stones

The village of Avebury is the site of several stone circles in the English county of Wiltshire. The Avebury Stone Circle is larger and older
than nearby Stonehenge and is one of the finest and largest Neolithic monuments in Europe dating to around 5,000 years ago.
Some of the original stones in this circle weighed in excess of 40 tons.

The groundskeeper at Thornbury Castle (stay there!) recommended Avebury to us. We thought it was conceptually more amazing than Stonehenge. And there we saw a genuine horse-drawn, canopied gypsy wagon with its owner; that added to the "otherworldliness" of this unique location.

Hi Jay, What great pictures! I have studied both of these many times. I have never heard of this place either. The first one in the first picture looks like a sculpture. I love that you captured the lost sheep in the shadow of the 3rd stone there something almost spiritual about that. The grazing sheep in the 2nd picture is the perfect touch. It would be so wonderful just to touch one of these stones. \/
