A Walnut From Our Black Walnut Tree

The walnuts are larger than golf balls and probably harder, and I took my life in my hands when I went on to the deck
to photograph them (see previous photo). They come bouncing down like hail stones, and they also stain
the deck. I may wear a hard hat from now on!

LOL..just rented house in KY, and wondered what seems to continually land on garage roof. Sounded like small bombs! Noticed squirrel hauling off with what I thought was huge green apple. Picked one up this morning, and noticed it looked like walnut (had to stomp the crap out of it to bust open) The gentleman above is right, I do see black splotches from these things hitting the drive. The tree is in the neighboring back yard, about 50' up and over my garage. Well, guess I will figure out how to process (if I can beat the squirrels) before holidays. Maybe I'll save a few bucks on my holiday nut purchase..or better yet, have more for my brownies!!!!!

They're edible, Bill, after you go through a convoluted process that takes a couple of weeks. It's easier to buy the Persian walnuts that we're familiar with at the grocery store. The shell is so strong that it's sometimes used to strengthen car tires! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_walnut
