Sweeper, Might of Islam Mosque, Dehi, India, 2008

I shot from inside of the ruins of this mosque, India’s first, framing a vista of the courtyard within a doorway. The frame adds a sense of perspective to the vista, and intensifies the scale incongruity of the small sweeper working within a large space. The shadowy stone paving on the interior of the mosque adds further perspective by leading the eye to the frame.

Thanks for pointing out the rhythmic repetition of the diagonal flow of light and the diagonal position of the broom, Tim. I never noticed that until now. I was intent on scale incongruity and framing for increased depth perspective. So much in our images can only be seen retrospectively. Such surprises can be unpleasant -- such as a distracting merger that somehow escaped our eye as we made a photo. But sometimes those surprises that come to our attention long after the picture has been made can be delightful, as in this case. Thanks for pointing it out.

I notice the how the diagonal light in the doorway not only leads the eye, but echos the diagonal of the broom.

In Kerala, they swept streets as well as monuments ( see my other sweepers at Cochin --http://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/95788821 ) I think both of your sweepers are extremely expressive, Mo.
