On the beach, Cochin, India, 2008

A group of crows devour scraps of food in the foreground layer while a group of Indians relax in the middle ground layer and two fishing boats work in the background layer. When we put the three layers together, we compress the incongruities of an Indian beach scene into an expressive beach scene.

Birds, baths and boats.

What a delightful scene! Knowing that there are only male humans in this photo makes me want to know the sex of the crows, busy with fish scraps. There are 10 crows, 11 people. I love the dirty froth of water between the birds and the bathers, the smiles on the two to the left, and the placid concentration of the fishermen with their graceful boats. Crows are such opportunistic ominivores, hanging around people whom they have come to associate with all kinds of spillage and tidbits, a kind of synchronicity where nothing goes to waste. This land has such extremes of food availability, so crows provide a sort of service.
