Keeper of the holy relics, Jama Mosque, Old Delhi, India, 2008

This man was showing our group some of the mosque’s holy relics. Rather than show the relics, I concentrated on the expressions of the man who was showing them to us. He was framed by the small arched door leading to the space that held the relics. I made that door frame part of my own frame, layering the image and creating a sense of depth perception in the process.

I thought this arch was very incongruous in scale. It was one of the most compact, confining arches I have ever seen. That is because it is a doorway, rather than an entry way. You are right, Tim -- it does seem to contain the "keeper" here more tightly than usual. Which is really what his job is all about -- safeguarding the sacred objects of the past.

Often arches give a feeling of flight and heavenly sweep. This one seems to be capturing the spirit of "keeper."
