Camel herd, Sawai Madhopur, India, 2008

Dozens of captive camels filled the road around our tour bus. I made dozens of pictures of the herd itself but I liked this wideangle shot the best – which I abstracted down to just black and white shadows, legs and feet. I converted it to black and white, which increased the degree of abstraction by removing all traces of coloration from the image. The image becomes more of a symbol and less of a description.

That's what makes this image so incongruous, Carol -- all those feet and just a few shadows. It's all a matter of my vantage point, frame, and the angle of the sun.

I love this! But just how you managed to get only a few shadows of camels in amongst so many feet I do not know. Effective image, Phil! I like how you use a mimimal amount of information in the form of shadows to convey a thought.

As I said in the caption, I made plenty of shots of the herd itself. But they were just shots of camels. This image was the essence of the experience for me, Mo.

I like this one, focus is on the reflection of the camels and the myriad of feet
