Street game, Hoi An, Vietnam, 2007

I loved the energy this young boy puts into his volley on the historic streets of Hoi An. The child just behind him seems to stand in awe of his prowess. The emotional contrast between the two children is astonishing. I photographed these children at play for more than 15 minutes until I was able to find the right moment in time, light, space, and context to tell this story.

Thanks, Tim, for noticing the placement of background tones that influence the whole by intensifying the contrasts between the two levels of activity here and creating, as you note, that yin/yang linkage.

I like the way the active boys face is in the dark part of the door and the shy boy is in the lighter part of the door. It is as if they form a yin/yang circle.

Thanks, as always, for these thoughts, Vera. Glad you see and feel the contrasts here. And yes, my galleries are entwined. This image could just as well be in my light and shadow gallery, or my response gallery or my human values gallery. But I put it here because this is the kind of thing that goes on in the streets all over the world. As for the light, it was made during that golden hour before sunset. The light is warmer, richer, and more beautiful and in this case, it enriches the colors on the ancient building in the background as well.

This picture makes me smile. You are so right about the emotional contrast. The boy in green is so confident. You can see it in his face.The little boy is too shy to step up. I think of him as being younger, looking on in amazement. Nothing is going to stop him. Your galleries are so entwined. The lighting in this photo is amazing as well. It brings the photo to life.
