Guard, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Hanoi, Vietnam, 2007

The final resting place of Ho Chi Minh, the primary leader and force behind Vietnam's emergence as an independent nation, is an important pilgrimage site for many Vietnamese, especially from the north. His embalmed body has been on display since 1975. We were not allowed inside – we were told that the body of Ho Chi Minh was “visiting” Moscow for “rehabilitation.” But I can still tell a story through the men who guard the tomb, whether Ho Chi Minh is there or not. I moved my camera position so that this guard stands squarely in front of a tree. Its limbs are reaching diagonally towards the upper left hand corner of the image. Meanwhile, he thrusts his right leg forward creating a counter diagonal that runs from right to left. His body also leans slightly along the same diagonal line. This image features a compositional pattern created by the diagonal flow of that tree, the implied diagonal posture of the guard, and the repeating horizontal lines of the sculpted tree at right and the hedge that carries the eye across the entire image. It is all about order, rigidity, and duty.

Soldiers the world over share these traits, Ceci. It comes with the territory. As for Uncle Ho, he wanted no part of any of this. He asked that he be cremated and his ashes scattered. However others felt differently, and so he is displayed in a massive bunker like tomb that would have made him cringe many times over.

An amazing and almost comically ludicrous picture! These military types seem to be universally intent on having a macho, sternly angry, threatening expression to go with their usually gaudy, be-weaponed, over wrought uniforms, because their deal is intimidation. And this guy even has spread his legs as though to make himself bigger, or perhaps to draw eyes to the area of his male organ! And reaching out to almost embrace this soldier are three lush branches (along with a strip that has cut him off at the knees), as though to say "look here, here is what is real and honest and true, the Natural World with its order and profusion of creativity and beauty; turn your eyes to us, we will keep you safe and centered. Order, rigidity and duty be hanged: relax and try to comprehend that in the final days, the jungle will reclaim everything, including you!" A strong and telling portrait for old Uncle Ho's tomb. He would have loved this guard!
