Kite seller, Summer Palace, Beijing, China, 2007

Everything in the image helps tell the story of man selling kites on the bridge over Kunming Lake in the huge park surrounding Beijing’s Summer Palace. His expression is intense – he looks skyward. We don’t see the kite he is flying, but we see another one in his hand and others just like it at his feet. We know that he is not just a recreational kite flyer – he sells these kites, and demonstration is his most effective selling tool. The kites at his feet are not for him. They are for us. We even know that he is at an imperial palace – the lion on the post behind him is the imperial symbol. Even the artwork on the kites themselves tell a story – the graceful woman emblazoned on them recalls a time when a chair carrying the Empress of China was borne across this very bridge.

It really does not matter if he was selling kites or just flying them, Tim. You hit it on the head here -- what matters is is the way he brings the past to life. In his face, and in the design of his kites.

(How wonderful that those of us on the bridge are commenting on this image) I didn't feel as if he were selling the kites because I saw him try to get all the connected kites into the air. I like this image because it seems to me to be showing a care and reverence for the past. We were in an ancient site - he seems to be sending the past gently into the sky.

Thanks, Shirley, for adding still another dimension to this story. By telling us that he does this for fun, we see him following his passion, rather than purely a commercial venture. But I still believe he enjoys selling them as well. As for the one big kite, that should be some spectacle when unfurled.

Phil, very nice photo. Colors of kites adds life to the foggy day. The guy does look like selling his kites with great skill, though he told me all the kites were connected into one big kite and he usually came here for fun. You can see how you took this picture from my gallery. It's great shooting with you in Summer Palace:http://www.pbase.com/wangxh/china

What a beautiful tribute to this image, Ceci. Your words evoke a sense of your own presence on the bridge -- this image has made you see and feel exactly what was going on and how it felt. And that is what telling a story is all about. Your wonderful imagination has added a few more chapters to my own story here...the Mickey Mouse allusion, the kite seller's optimism, the theatricality of the lady on the kite. Thanks so much for not only enjoying my story, but for making it your own as well.

Such a graceful, colorful and contrasting image, Phil! I love the startlingly bright hues of the kites, his white gloved hands (probably to keep from being cut by the string, but that lend a kind of Mickey Mouse feeling), the slight fogginess of the water and air behind him, the little imperial lion keeping an eye on the proceedings and the swirls of to-be-sold kites lying at his feet. His expression is focussed and somewhat serious, but also hopeful; and as your lovely description points out, he's doing the most efficacious thing by flying his kite in order to lure customers. A charming scene, full of both potential commerce and a sort of innocence, and the hint of theater in the painted lady on the kite he's holding. Made me smile!
