Requiem, Denver, Colorado, 2007

A huge photograph of an American Indian chief looms over the Denver Cultural Center.
It is several stories high, and can be seen at a great distance. It is intended to draw visitors to a local museum, yet to me it speaks more forcefully as a requiem – a token of remembrance for culture that has virtually been exterminated. I framed the photograph of this long dead chief in shadowy leaves -- an incongruous symbol of hope and life.

Beautifully put, Rose Marie -- It is indeed an image of another Paradise Lost. Have you seen another image I made just two days earlier on this recent Denver trip, which is actually titled Paradise Lost? It's athttp://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/82043053 If not, your use of that term was a remarkable coincidence.

His spirit is entombed on a modern building wall, yet his piercing eyes look through the living leaves he will never touch. Another Paradise Lost.

If the Indian had been originally photographed in color, it would not have represented what has been lost. It would have represented the here and now. In this color image, the black and white portrait of the Indian is indeed the spirit of the past, contrasted to the green leaves in the foreground, the symbol of life, hope, and the present. Thanks, Alina, for coming to this image.

With his sad smile the black and white Indian looks like spirit from our past.
