Red hand, di Rosa Preserve, Napa Valley, California, 2007

This huge ceramic sculpture by the late Viola Frey lies on the grounds of the 217 acre di Rosa Preserve. It is part of a vast collection of contemporary art amassed by collector Rene di Rosa. I was drawn to this piece because of the interplay of light, shadow and color. When art is displayed outdoors, where the light source is always changing, nature itself becomes part of the creative process. In this case, natural light defines the bright red hand most dramatically. By using a spot meter, I expose on the hand, and allow the rest of the image to fall more deeply into shadow. The red hand is shocking – it is as if it was covered in blood. The sculpture itself is recumbent, as if dead or unconscious. The face is in dappled light, muting the red color and putting greater emphasis on the red hand. No matter what the artist’s own intentions may have been, by photographing the sculpture at this time, in this light, and in this manner, I make my own appeal to the imagination.

Yes it is powerful, Marcia. Red is a provocative color, and the body language of this work of art is equal to it.

Well said, Xin. Powerless, indeed. Red is one of the most vital of colors, but in this case, it is incongruously used to
suggest sadness, and perhaps even death. Red also draws the eye to an image faster than other colors. It is most
vividly concentrated here on that expressively silent hand.

Vivid colors usually suggest animation and life- flowers, birds, butterflies in the forest. Yet this image, while capturing my attention immediately, cast the a sad mood. As if there was a figure who used to possess enormous visual glories, was propelled onto the stage and off. Her emotionless face suggested that her powerlessness in making the change.

Thanks for linking this image to your own, Mo. Yes, I agree -- your message is one of harmony. And this is one of dissonance. In both cases, we use light and shadow to intensify the message intended by the original artist. And in your case, you add an incongruous sleeping figure as well.

The colors remind me a little bit of my own image I took in India last year:http://www.pbase.com/trevvelbug/image/71034450 . But the message of your image is completely different. Whereas my mask conveys a sence of watching over the person benevolently, this bloodred hand conveys anger, rage, violence.
