Sunrise, Zabriskie Point, Death Valley National Park, California, 2007

For me, the most beautiful sunrise shots at Zabriskie Point are made just before the eroded, vibrantly colored badlands that surround it are fully illuminated. In this image, two golden ridges embrace a single red mudsill. It is this half revealed scene that sets the mood and creates the atmosphere of this image. It is a surreal landscape photograph – made so by the textures and colors created by the first rays of dawn.

I saw the birthing metaphor here, too, Ceci. That is an appropriate metaphor, since new mountains and hills are always being "born" by the movements the earth itself. Thank you, Mo and Ceci, for realizing how important the light is to this image. And that is why this viewpoint at Zabriskie point is so crowded with people at dawn and dusk, and comparatively deserted the rest of the day.

This photo has a feeling of birth, with the red/brown mountain "crowning" between the "legs" of the taller ranges. It's a beautiful, powerful shot, and I'm glad you get up early in order to catch all the amazing moments that unfold as the sun climbs into the sky.
