Medina street, Marrakesh, Morocco, 2006

A bike, a man reading a newspaper, and three women dressed according to Islamic custom, carrying purchases, They fill the width of the old street. Their shadows fall before them on ancient, sun washed cobblestones. This is the heart of the medina – the old walled city – of Marrakesh. It is a moment in light, space, and time that offers the viewer a sense of place.

We often find ourselves in exotic places at Christmas. It is good time for us to get away. And yes, this is a very typical street scene in Morocco. The man with newspaper is probably waiting to meet someone, and is killing time. The ancient streets are so narrow, going back in time hundreds of years. So yes, this image does give you a good sense of place. This is what Marrakesh is -- old, full of tradition, and crowded.

Wow, Christmas in Morocco followed by Christmas in Vietnam. Sweet!!! I feel in this photo as if I am walking down the street with them. The light is shining perfectly on the man's newspaper as if someone from above were shining a light for him to read by. What a strange place for him to stop to read his newspaper.
