Nuzzle, Fall Creek horse camp, Bridger National Forest, Wyoming, 2006

We meet Randall Perry, a veteran rodeo rider, in this horse camp just outside of Yellowstone National Park. I was making an environmental portrait of him in the golden light of the forest ( click on thumbnail below ) with one of his horses when suddenly the horse took him by surprise and began to nuzzle him. I made this photo just as they came cheek to cheek. Perry reacted with surprise – we can see it in his facial expression and body language. This image is rich in human values such as affection, humor, delight and surprise.

I would guess that you would probably agree with my list of human values, the first being affection, which was, for me at least, the most obvious. Or, as you imply "a mutual fondness."
Thanks for enjoying this image as much I enjoyed making it, Merri.

This horse is very fond of its owner. From Randall's smile, I'd say the feeling is mutual. They are both relaxed and comfortable in each others' presence. The horse's loose lips and sideways, floppy ears just out of the frame confirm it. Lovely back-lit afternoon glow to this photo, but not enough to underexpose them both too much. I love how both Randall and his horse are salt and pepper with pink, sunburned skin.

You are right -- he has just been kissed by horse. Animals do express love -- they love being fed. (Ruby can tell you that, I'm sure.)

He is getting a kiss...what better emotion than love.
