For sale, Green River, Utah, 2006

Fewer than a thousand people live in Green River. Perhaps the quickest way to sell a car is to park it next to the town’s coffee shop -- everyone who needs to buy a car will almost certainly see it. This one can’t be overlooked: a bright yellow Beetle. All three prime colors – red, yellow, and blue – are present in this scene. It is yellow that steals the show and begs for our attention.

You won't forget about it when it becomes part of your life. I want you to begin to see as a photographer sees, Vera, and that means being conscious of color, of moments in time, of spaces and shadows and how they fall. I want you make your eyes into frames -- so you think in terms of what is seen and what is not. All of this takes time and practice, but it will come.

I am looking forward to this challenge. I tend to forget about it.

Glad to bring a Beetle your way, Vera. I am always consciously looking for things that are yellow, red, and blue -- the primary colors. I have now trained my eye to notice color first, the thing second. You can do it to -- just practice being cognizant of every color you see. They are there. You just have to sort out all the crap around it and focus on the color itself.

This brought a smile to my face, just like that yellow happy face symbol. I love volks beetles. Wish I could buy it. The yellow really did grab my eye. When I was thinking about sitting down to go through this gallery tonight, I was wondering about photoing color and how you do it. You answered my question in your introduction when you commented that you must purposely look for it. I must remember to do this, finding the picture in the strangest places I am sure.
