On Peach Blossom Bridge, Guilin, China, 2006

Pedestrians and vehicles of all kinds converge at the approach to this bridge, which links the Peach Blossom to Banyan Lake. I chose this particular spot because of the curve in the roadway, which draws the eye into the frame. I like the contrasts here – the woman brushing her hair away from her face is only six feet away from a bicycle cart full of plastic bags and boxes going in the opposite direction. Meanwhile, eight motorbikes make their way through traffic, as Guilin goes to work

Thanks, David, for noticing the exclamation point coming out of the man's head. I did not mention it in the caption, because I hope my viewers will find alternate meanings in my images on their own. You did, and yes -- the image certainly expresses what may be going through his mind at this moment. That sign was one of the reasons I chose this spot -- I was hoping I could incorporate it into the fabric of the story here. Another important aspect of this image are its color relationships. I noticed the yellow in the traffic sign and the blue in the Panasonic sign, and saw a large red bus on the street, which gives this image all three primary colors to draw the eye. I also like the way the yellow in the sign is echoed by the yellow bags in the back of the bike. The bags draw the eye to the sign.

Was the exclamation mark on top of the man's head the result of an intentional composition?
It seems like the man were suddenly awaken by the passing, rather 'gorgeous', woman.

You sum up the expression in this image beautifully, Rodney. I found the sweet spot in the bridge, the best place to capture the comings and goings of both vehicular traffic and pedestrians. The woman is the focal point -- she seems to lead the way to the future, and as you say, does it boldly in both dress and demeanor.

Again, you present a great lesson on how to choose a location, and wait for the proper moments to capture the scene. I love the incongruity of the individuals going in one direction, some with more traditional transportation, while the woman (dressed quite modern) seeks a direction different from the others. It speaks to me that Chinese women are becoming more and more modern and independent. She conforms to her own standard and ventures forward boldly.
