Encouragement, Shuhe, China, 2006

Many Naxi women living in the Lijiang area wear decorative costumes unique to their culture. I was walking behind two of them and observed this gentle touch of encouragement. By focusing on the intricate design of the four huge buttons that attach the blouse of the costume to the skirt, I reveal detail that speaks of the nature of that culture, right down to the smallest threads and stitching on the face of the buttons and on the towel that hangs below the belt.

Welcome home! I can't wait to see your impressions of Tibet. And thanks for choosing this image, Alister, for comment. You are right -- this is an intimate image, and makes the viewer an intimate as well. I remember showing this one to you shortly after I made it. I did not realize it at the time, but the fingers are in soft focus, which, to me anyway, makes that touch even gentler. I would love to see how you worked on those feet walking the cobbled street.

Allie and I got back from Tibet last night, such an interesting place, but pretty hard-going schleping the 500mm around at 14000 feet..

This is the first image I have commented on from your visit to see us, and at the time you took it, I admired your vision. It is so easy when confronted with a multitude of new senses to be overawed and snap away at the obvious. When the two of us walked behind this little group of Naxi women you shot this image and I shot their feet on the cobbled stone streets..

I very much like this image Phil, it tells us so much more about the intimacy of Naxi culture than a stock shot image ever would..

Very nice work..

As the examples in this gallery demonstrate, small details carry much meaning. When we stress detail, we are abstracting the image, finding a symbolic essence that tells the story in a way that the viewer might not normally see.

lovely detail, it says so much more than just photographing the entire costume.
