Teamwork, Baisha, China, 2006

One man pulls while another pushes in order to move a heavily loaded cart up the sloping street of this small farming town just outside of Lijiang. Both move in perfect synch, step for step. No effort is wasted. They had obviously done this before and will do it again.
It’s a perfect demonstration of cooperation, which is an essential human value.

I like what you see here, Xin. A marriage based on cooperation and effort. In fact, both of these people are men -- so it's really a different kind of team at work here. They are workers whose skills are perfectly matched. There is great harmony here -- still another important human value. As for family, they could be father and son. In any event, they perform an arduous task seamlessly.

They look like a couple and from this image; I see the value of the marriage and family. They arduously made efforts to move a seemingly heavy cart, but their intimate co-operation made this scene touching and full of human value.

Thank you, Christine -- I do most of my shooting in the early morning or late evening when I travel. My pbase friend Alister Benn (http://www.pbase.com/alibenn ) who now lives in Lijiang, drove me to this village because I could photograph things pretty much they way they have been for centuries. You are right -- the only clue that we are in the 21st century are those wires. I left them in for that reason -- I wanted just a touch of today to contrast to the look of yesterday.

Phil, the light is beautiful and emphasizes what you are trying to show. At first and mainly I see a scene from the Middle Ages, in Asia or Europe, except for the electrical wires. Christine
