Morning Pines, Yosemite National Park, California, 2004

Morning light at Yosemite is enchanting, making ordinary subjects such as this stand of pines into memorable visions. I used a long lens to throw the golden meadow behind these pines into soft focus, and bring a warm and rich feeling to this natural scene. Compared to many of my other landscapes, this one is quite intimate. Yet we don’t measure the effect of a landscape photograph by the amount of real estate it covers. We can only evaluate the effect it has on the imagination of you, the viewer. When you look at this image, what does it say to you? What feelings does it trigger? What do you think of it? I would be delighted to know.

Your comment reminds me of the phrase "Cannot see the forest for the trees." It is indeed easier to see trees when the forest is not in the way, and I made sure of it here by isolating a single tree against the golden meadow in the background. Thanks, Anna.

The first thought I had was also of a forest fire. Apart from the great color and warmth I like the way that one tree is singled out, as if it was the last tree standing. Easier to see the trees if the forest isn't in the way.

Once again, it is your context for Yosemite that gives this photograph an extra measure of meaning to you. Yosemite in autumn is literally a golden valley, and I tried to express that in an abstract way in this image.

But I think it more than light and color- I feel it is the interplay of detail and context. The pattern of these trees is delightful to the eye, but the context of the golden light on the beautiful meadow makes the image spring to life. I think this sums up Yosemite in a way that perhaps only someone who had been there can understand.

That was what motivated me to take this shot -- the colors are so warm it almost like a benign fire. Once again, it is all just light and color at work.

My initial thought was that there was a forest fire in the background - and that you were one brave hombre! Love the play of light and dark, sharp and soft - which you've honed to perfection throughout this gallery.

Scratchy, indeed. But it is a warm scratchiness, isn't it, Marek?

A beautiful study in the patterns of nature. The first feeling it triggers is ‘scratchy’.
