The remembered and forgotten, Shanghai, China, 2004

Shanghai is a city of incongruous contrasts. In People's Park, a heroic, large scale sculpture recalls the heroism of Shanghai students who died in a long ago revolution. Yet beneath the legs of this sculpture we can also see the legs of an unknown vagrant who is among the forgotten of Shanghai.

Thanks, Mikel, for extending the meaning of this image to include the irony of a memorial to heroic students reaching out to shelter one of life's losers.

Inpacting image indeed, that sais alot about the certain inhumanity of a city, we give more importance to the dead heroes then to the living normal people, but on the other hand, as an extension of the heroic act that the students did, they are also the onlyones that are giving some kind of protection to that vagabond.

You see the irony here. Monuments are meant to remember. The homeless are forgotten. Here, the two coverge to create another kind of monument, a monument to indifference.

yes, that happens a lot in our "developed" societies. the many and more every day left behinds that seem to not deserve a monument dedicated to them, still take refuge in one like they sleep in ATMs or wherever the symbols of their oppression are.

Gone but warm. Three little words that certainly sum this image up. This man's life is essentially "gone" in that he no longer functions as a productive person. But at least he is warm. And there is no doubt that he prefers to be left alone.
