Sled Dog Pups, Iditarod HQ, Alaska, 2002

This photo of two sleeping Alaskan sled dog pups brings viewers a closeup view of an intimate moment. By choosing to frame it tightly, I kept everything else out of the shot and intensify its sense of intimacy. The closer I came to these pups, the more tightly they cuddled. How we use our frame can determine what our pictures will express.

Right. Framing correctly is here the point. Nothing is wasted, nothing disturbs. A beautiful image to contemplate about animal innocence.

One of the points I make repeatedly in these galleries is the role of the viewer's imagination in the meaning of photographs. You have given us a wonderful example of imagination in action here -- by seeing a heart in this picture, everything changes. I simply intended to use a tight frame to intensify the feeling intimacy here. Your comment adds an entirely new level of meaning to the picture. And that is what is so wonderful about this medium of expressive photography, Tim -- its potential for depth of meaning, depending upon what each viewer thinks and sees.

I wonder if a heart shape came about because it evokes a coming together of two separate parts at the top which unites at the bottom. Or, if a heart shape evokes a feeling of love and contentment because of its cultural symbolism. In either case this image has a hidden heart shape within the frame, formed by the heads and completed by the large leg. Perhaps that is why it feels so warm to me.

Claude -- I don't do much photography of domestic animals either, but I couldn't resist this opportunity to use the frame to create intimacy by limiting perspective. Phil

Very nice picture. I love those dogs. Usually I am not a fan of animal's picture, but in that case, I do like it. I love the way you tightened the frame. I like the way there is no perspective. Very nice.
