End of the road, Yotala, Bolivia, 2014

Yotala’s streets often end abruptly -- a village turns into a desert when the cobblestones run out. This street comes to such an end. A man stands brooding at the intersection of stone and sand. I used backlight to silhouette him, turning the figure into a symbol of loneliness, a person seemingly in search of some answers. I don’t know if he actually is lonely or not – it is simply my interpretation that makes him seem so lost and alone in this image.

You see the ideas that I am trying to express here, Celia. The street that leads nowhere...the abstracted downcast silhouette, the copper tonalities that imply the passage of time, all make the viewer think, feel, and wonder. There is indeed an emotional quality to this image as well -- I see a sense of sadness. You feel a sense of the romantic sentimentality. The image works both on the mind and the emotions simultaneously.

I like the mystery that you are expressing here with the dark, sad silhouette on a strange, empty street that leads to nowhere. It leaves us something to think about. Interestingly, the warm, golden-sepia tones of your picture also injects a sense of romanticism and sentimentality to it, evoking an emotional response in the viewer.
