Portrait of a Tobacco worker, Havana, Cuba, 2012

The abundant detail on this man’s face defines his character and his occupation as an agricultural worker. I fill the balance of the image with the product he creates and nourishes. Cuban cigars are considered among the finest in the world, and there is a sense of great pride running through this image as well. I was one of a number of photographers making portraits of this man at this moment. Holding a bundle of tobacco, he was patiently posing for others off to my right. I preferred to work on this side view perspective rather than the more typical frontal portrait pose. He thereby seems to ignore me altogether – I become an observer here, rather than his confronter.

You are right about that, Jude -- human skin and the dry tobacco leaf are quite similar in appearance, and that resemblance helps tell the story here.

My goodness ... this is an amazing portrait. This mans face tells his life story so well. He looks like some one who has spent years doing hard work, perhaps out in the fields growing that tobacco. I like the textures - the skin and drying tobacco have so much in common.

I saw the wrinkled leaf and worn face as compatriots here, Celia, as well. And the brow sweats, Tim -- a classic symbol of hard work.

The hotness of the light on his face is a reminder of the heat he works in daily.

Oh! Another amazing portrait! The tanned and leathered skin of this old man almost mirror the tobacco that he has dedicated his life to in this industry!

Thanks for seeing the hard life and the honesty in this portrait, Carol. I have many photos of him made from the front, and in all of them, he seemed a bit self conscious. Yet from the side, he appears much more natural.
His skin reflects his years of outdoor labor under the Cuban sun.

The side angle of photographing his face seems more honest, soulful than the straight on approach. The man's skin, talled and wrinkled suggests to me a full life of hard labor.
