Pleasure at sea, aboard Seven Seas Mariner, off coast of Brazil, 2010

Cruises can be great for photography – the variety of subject matter is infinite. However when the schedule calls for a day at sea, photography is restricted to whatever we might find of visual interest onboard. Often parties and events featuring passengers themselves can work well as expression. In this case, I found three passengers enjoying the antics of other passengers participating in a seaborne “country fair.” While one of the passenger records the fun, the others explode in laughter, particularly the woman clasping her hands. While all three wear sunglasses, denying us a glimpse of eye expression, the faces and hands still manage to tell the story well.

The key is to spend enough time in a place where people are having fun, Carol. I made many images, involving dozens of passengers. This is the image that worked best for me.

This certainly captures the fun passengers have on these cruises!! As a photographer, I like how cruise ships offer many different levels to capture odd angles and close up views of what's going on. You've demonstrated this here. They all look like they're really enjoying themselves as I hope you did too.

Laughter is universal - it makes all of us smile. Thanks, Iris.

The joy you captured in this image made me smile.

Thanks, Celia. I could have just as well placed this image in my Human Values gallery, since joy and remembrance are both important values held in common by all of us. I put it in my Tourism gallery because it was a perfect image about the pleasures of travel -- camaraderie, spontaneity, and just having a lot of fun.

What a wonderful image about human values! This warm and uplifting image expresses the joy, and the human desire to capture a moment of delight to keep for eternity.
