Love letter, Bucharest, Romania, 2009

The wall itself is a study in decay, part of the crumbling core of Old Bucharest. Yet someone still loves the place, at least according to the torn poster. The strange figure in the cartoon has company as well, a disintegrating caricature with no arms, a soaring mustache, and a toothy grin. Seen together on a layered wall of decay, they make an incongruous set of local boosters.

I knew you would enjoy as I was making it, Carol. This graffiti was created with a touch of humor, which you obviously appreciate. As for whoever left this love letter, I leave that up to the imagination. There really is no way to find out unless he or she stumbles upon this image and lets us know.

Somehow the fact that the love letter poster appears on the newest layer of decay says something of the hopeful future of this city, even in spite of the peeling character drawing to it's right. Also the fact that the message reads in English suggests that perhaps a tourist "donated" this art to the wall. In any case, this is an amusing, but also fascinating image.
