Wonderful Beds, Astoria, Oregon, 2009

I thought the quaint sign heralding the benefits of staying in this old hotel was amusing in itself, but then noticed that the weather did not seem amused. A rainstorm was moving in on us from above, making those beds seem even more wonderful. I stress the brute force that Nature brings to bear on man here, yet at the same time offer a cozy alternative as context.

You are right, Carol. It is all in how we look at it. That's the whole point of looking a pictures, isn't it? Of putting ourselves into them. And if you see the clouds as soft and pillow like, so be it. All I saw was a lot of impending rain overhead, making those "wonderful beds" looked awfully good at the moment.

But then, the soft billowy clouds could be a reminder to us of the cozy soft pillows on those wonderful beds. It's all in how you look at it!! :>)

Thanks, Rose, for pointing out the contrast here between natural forms and man-made forms. You are right about the fury of nature. Those towns along the Columbia River can get pretty wet. As for those wonderful beds, I can't say. We stayed at a nearby motel, and the beds there were fine.

I like the contrast between nature's rounded forms in the clouds to the angular shapes made by humans. The softly billowing shapes contain the fury of nature. Unlike the sharp angles and brick walls of the hotel, I hope the beds are soft.
