Card game, Columbus Park, Chinatown, New York City, New York, 2009

Bundled against the chill, a card player ponders his next move. We know what his opponent has in his hand, the man in the red hat must guess before he commits. This image is about the moment of decision in a card game that is just one of the many that were going on in this park. Columbus Park is the only park in Chinatown -- the community’s outdoor rec room. It was built in the 1890s, replacing the notorious Mulberry Bend slum photographed by reformer Jacob Riis.

I am glad I linked you to this image when commenting on your own picture of urban gamesmanship athttp://www.pbase.com/sveetzel/image/115903405 I find it fascinating to study such gestures and come with our own interpretations of them. The camera can't get into the head of this man, but it certainly gets him into the head of the viewer. I like your "weary of the game" idea -- his closed eyes certainly could indicate such a state of mind. Or maybe it is all a ruse? Is he pretending to be tired, while he actually is calculating the effect of his next move?

Yes, this man's hands portray less patience I think. they seem taut. He is pondering but realizes perhaps that he must do it more quickly. He seems disturbed a bit by this and his face shows this, cupped by his hand for support. He might be weary of the game, or maybe he is realizing he may not win the game at all. I find game players such as these men fascinating, playing right on the street with the public in full view of their every move. Wonderful gesture study here, Phil!
