[2004-12-09] L'église d'Auvers-sur-Oise

France

The Church at Auvers-sur-Oise,
which Vincent van Gogh painted
two months before his suicide.

Proto digital photo editing!
My first experience with digital imaging was Kodak Picture Disk:
check a box when you drop off the film and get your prints back with
a floppy disk of the images -- 600x400 and extreme JPEG compression.
And for editing, I had Adobe PhotoDeluxe 1.0, which came with an
Epson Stylus Color 500. This was one of my first efforts.
I'd photographed the church with a poster of van Gogh's
painting out front, and I tried to manipulate the image
to look like the painting. Doesn't look anything like
the van Gogh, but I liked the results anyway.

Thanks, Markus -- I'll post the original if I ever find it!

why don't you post the original image, just for comparison... this is a great editing job.

I really like the surreal quality of this. There is a sense of 'ohmygod .. van Gogh didn't use impressionist techniques on this one!' This should be a poster.

Thanks, everyone! I'd been looking for this file for a while and finally found it on an old computer. Donald, if you look through my galleries you'll notice I hardly ever do this kind of editing -- I mostly shoot "straight from the camera" like you, occasionally cropping but usually composing in the camera (habit from slides?). The only other photoshopped example I can think of is Fruit Crop Filtered .

wonderful! tghanks for the explanation! for now i do everythign straight out of the camera except for cropping 1 in a hundred... but this inspires me to learn and experiment more thanks don

Very nice image. I love the "painting" in the corner.

Nice painting effect. Good choice to have the small shot in the corner.
