I heard a "thud" - kind of like someone had thrown a tennis ball against the house and walked from room to room and I just happened to glance out the backyard window and there it was just below the window - a Sharp-shinned Hawk and a Mourning Dove. I watched him pull a few feathers off the dove as I shot through the window and then I heard the neighbors dog bark a couple of times. The hawk grabbed the dove to fly off but as he got closer to the fence (which was only about 6 feet away) the dove fell from it's grasp and the hawk sat on the fence for a minute looking around and the dove was laying in the snow. Suddenly I saw the dove take off away from the fence followed by the hawk. I went to the back porch to see if I could pick them up somewhere else in the yard but they both were gone! I'm sure he'll be back. He was pretty thin looking - probably because he didn't get to eat his catch.
