A bit of flashing in the woods - ooerr missus!

Hmmmmph - I can tell when I'm not happy with the pics I've come back with - I've spent far too long trying to pick one and process it... hopping back and forth between three alternates, tinkering in PhotoMangler, bah. I like smoother pics with less... detail.

ok... advice heeded - and it's right - the same thing as a blown sky detracting attention from the main subject - only with a blown sky it's easy just to crop it out...
Alternate after some more fettlage...

I think this is a really strong image... has a fairy tale feel to me like that tree could become alive again! I'll leave the technical critique to the others :) I do like your version 2 though with less white in the background.

Aha, but I like this.
The fallen tree and branches are made the focus, through the composition and lighting. However, the fact that they also blend in, sort of pr-empts the fact that this is exactly what they will become a part of...given time...decaying into the woodland floor.
It's something I have tried to convey, many-a-time and oft...sadly with no success. So I say...well done that man, and thank you for yet more ideas, and inspiration.

I have a question, when a tree falls in the forest, and no one is there, does it make a sound? Just a quantum mechanics question! :) Un géant au pieds d'argile! The mighty they fall eventually, great resumé of life.

Oh Norm, I'm not a good photo critic to give you proper advice. I like this image and believe that your focal point is the top, branchy area of the fallen tree. What I might have considered doing is to darken the river a little bit in the background (so that it doesn't draw the eye there). And maybe play with cropping a bit.
I do like the dark and moody effect of the forest. :^)

I agree with the comments already made - to somehow block out that glarey strip
of white and keep it dark and sombre so we only concentrate on the dead tree.

Mmmm, I share your quandary...I'm not really sure what the focal point is here, I don't mean technically I mean in a 'what are we looking at?' sense The bottom quarter of the whole frame is a dark, higgledy-piggledyness which doesn't arrest the eye..it's only when we get up to the small branch at mid-centre left do we start to see any definition. And strangely for you, the flash isn't too brill (excuse the pun!!) either - It was only by reading the comments and your narrative that I knew you'd used it. But it's not all lost - the diagonal of the tree is a strong feature. and the distant trunks silhouetted by the white beyond is quite a strong element too. All IMHO of course, but I hope this is of use :o))

I like the textures and the massive amount of detail. The dark "exposure" sets a mood that fits the death of this mighty tree.

Certainly a really dramatic image, the use of flash is cool and you've done a great job with the available light... I'm probably with Smit on the white strip at the back, in one way it adds a lot of depth, but in a busy comp, its quite a strong element.. Tough one, as you are clearly limited with perspectives... I'll just say "awesome shot" and move on :-)

Well...I think the foreground detail in and around the fallen tree is sublime and your lighting only improves the image.....the only slight distraction for me is the light strip in the background. This is because it's much brighter than the really interesting bits and draws attention away from them. Easily sorted with a bit more Photomangling though :)

At least it's not over exposed, that can happen when you flash in the woods.
