ID help

Help I am new at trying to ID my subjects. I thought this one would be quite easy

but apparently not for me.

The yellow of the head also runs down its sides but is not continuous.

It was in the middle of the bush and this is the best shot I managed to get.

Thanks Phil

No doubt about the basic ID; it is a male Scorpion Fly, possibly Panorpa germanica but the 3 UK species are impossible to definitely seperate without examining their genitilia under a microscope (and they don't like it up them).

Looks fierce but totally harmless to humans.

No idea, Mr. Phil. I'd post it on www.bugguide.net and you should get an ID easily. I'd be sure to include an estimated size with it too. Good shot for ID, nice and sharp.
